This is a call for application in an international and interdisciplinary project between Goethe University
Frankfurt and Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany), Boğaziçi University Istanbul and Atatürk University
Erzurum (Turkey) funded by the German Academic Research Council (DAAD).
What is the project about?
Orient and Occident were in continuous contact in particular during the first millennium CE, exchanging
people and ideas, motifs, goods and practices. There are manifold allusions to and appropriations of the other,
reflecting an intense cultural contact and exchange besides all the hostile events that took place. To that
respect, Orient and Occident cannot be separated when trying to understand and contextualize creative and
aesthetic processes of this period in particular in the East Mediterranean. This project focuses on aesthetic
interaction and aims to connect different disciplines and bring students from Turkey and Germany together
through scientific and cultural dialogues.
Who can apply?
The project is open to advanced BA and MA students, PhD candidates as well as Early Career Researchers
(ERCs) of disciplines such as Art History, Byzantine Studies, Archaeology, Islamic Studies, Sociology, etc. The
common language will be English; knowledge of Turkish would be advantageous.
What is your contribution?
The project includes three “schools” comprising reading classes and excursions to Germany and Turkey over
2023 and 2024. Participants receive reading assignments within small groups, are supervised by the organizers,
and are supposed to prepare presentations on the subjects. While the preparations will be held digitally, the
whole group will meet in person during the excursions. A joint virtual exhibition is planned towards the end of
the project. You will need to attend one initial information session, then you will be able to prepare the
readings with your fellows within the group. Your contribution can span about 2 hours per week.
Our Schedule:
“Autumn School” (Jul – Sep 2023), including a ten-day excursion to Frankfurt and Mainz
“Winter School” (Oct 2023 – Jan 2024), including a ten-day excursion to Istanbul
“Summer School” (Mar – Jul 2024), including one week excursion to Erzurum
Exhibition “Women & Art. The female in early Christian, Byzantine and early Islamic art production”
How can I apply?
Please send the following documents via email to: Dr. Fateme Rahmati < Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein! >
- Short academic CV (including your research interests)
- Letter of motivation and letter of reference from your supervisor or academic teacher
- Proof of proficiency in English
Deadline: 26th of June 2023
What do you get?

SoHP-MHAAM/Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship in Archaeology
The Classical World in Context: the Near East
The Initiative for the Science of the Human Past at Harvard (SoHP) announces a 2-year postdoctoral appointment at Harvard in the framework of the Max Planck-Harvard Research Center for the Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean (MHAAM), funded by Getty and with support from the Reich lab at Harvard.
We are looking for an exceptionally able archaeologist of Classical civilization who is interested in participating in archaeogenetic and archaeological research into the interaction of Classical and Near Eastern Civilization. The candidate need have no prior experience in ancient DNA or ancient biomolecular research but will want to be curious and open to the new approaches. The postdoc will be paired with another postdoc, an archaeogeneticist, for the 2-year period of the award; we envision that the archaeologist will teach archaeology to the geneticist and serve as an archaeological resource for the lab. S/he will be motivated to learn and to co-author new studies that integrate advanced archaeological research with new archaeogenetic discoveries.
The successful candidate will have the rights and privileges that come with such an appointment at Harvard, including access to Widener and Tozzer Libraries. Some limited teaching might be possible, which would serve the postdoc exceedingly well as they seek to build their career profile for a tenure-track academic position. The postdoc will be an integral and valued member of our team, which is fun and supportive. Previous postdocs in our program have all gone on to tenure-track and tenured positions in the U.S. and Europe.
This position will be under the direction of Prof. Michael McCormick (Department of History, Harvard University), who chairs SoHP at Harvard and is Co-Director of MHAAM. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible postdoctoral fellow appointment at Harvard University. The position is initially for one year with a salary of $65,000, with reappointment for an additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance and review. Ideally the selected candidate will begin as soon as possible on or after July 1, 2023.
For further information on SoHP, MHAAM, and the affiliated Reich lab at Harvard, please consult the following websites:
https://sohp.fas.harvard.edu/
https://www.archaeoscience.org/
https://reich.hms.harvard.edu/
Application materials must include:
o Letter of interest explaining how you propose to help your archaeogeneticist partner incorporate archaeological method and thinking into their approach and how familiarity with archaeogenetics may deepen your own archaeological work.
o Current curriculum vitae.
o Two or three confidential letters of recommendation. References should be from experts at the ladder faculty ranks; it may be appropriate to include highly accomplished senior researchers from corporations or research institutes, or well-established museum professionals, depending on the candidate's background.
A copy of doctoral degree verification will be required for candidates who have received their degree within one year of the effective start date. - CRASIS Network schemeJun 08Donnerstag, 08. Juni 2023 12:55
Dear all,
CRASIS is pleased to announce its new Networks scheme, which aims to create opportunities for researchers in Groningen to work together around a common research interest. In these networks members support each other in developing research projects and writing grant applications, as well as organizing events that support discussion and disseminate the work of the network members. CRASIS offers to give financial support for the organization of network events for a period of two years.
We invite applications from researchers seeking to establish multi- or interdisciplinary research networks. Please find attached the Call for Applications with information on how to apply and the network requirements. This will be a yearly call, with the deadline for the first round of applications being 30th June 2023.
We look forward to receiving your applications, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with further questions.
Sylvia BuiterReMa-student Classical, Medieval and Early Modern studies.on behalf of the CRASIS teamUniversity of GroningenCRASIS is the Groningen institute for Interdisciplinary Studies in Culture, Religion and Society of the Ancient World. Follow CRASIS on Facebook or find out more about us on www.rug.nl/crasis.--
CRASIS is a platform for the study of antiquity and brings together experts in the Graeco-
Roman world and Near Eastern studies —Classical Greece, the Hellenistic world, the Roman
Empire, Judaism, Christianity and Islam — at the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Religion,
Culture and Society of the University of Groningen and the Protestant Theological University.
Its aim is to advance interdisciplinary study of the interplay between culture, religion and
society in antiquity.
CRASIS Networks Scheme
CRASIS aims to support and stimulate research projects on antiquity that transcend
disciplinary and faculty boundaries. To this end, CRASIS invites applications from researchers
seeking to establish multi- or interdisciplinary research networks. The CRASIS Networks
scheme aims to create opportuni2es for researchers in Groningen to work together around a
common research interest. In these networks members support each other in developing
research projects and wri2ng grant applica2ons, as well as organizing events that support
discussion and disseminate the work of the network members. CRASIS offers to give financial
support for the organization of network events for a period of two years.
Bringing together staff and research students from across faculties and at different career
stages, CRASIS Networks promote interdisciplinary thinking and the development of
collaborative skills. The convenors of Networks must come from three different disciplines (of
which at least two must be part of CRASIS) and the theme of the Network must relate to the
study of Mediterranean antiquity. We encourage Networks which bring the study of antiquity
into conversation with other disciplines as well as contemporary societal issues. Ideally,
network events should provide genuine opportunities for discussion and collaboration and
should be open to participants from across the University of Groningen and the Protestant
Theological University.
Activities organised by the network may include seminars, reading groups, discussion forums,
guest speaker talks, performances, film screenings, guided walks, visits to museums, hands-
on workshops and any other ac2vi2es that will further the intellectual and collabora2ve aims
of the Network.
The choice of research theme and the range of activities organized by the network is to be
decided by the Network convenors, CRASIS does not aim to set the networks’ agendas. We
also do not set an initial threshold for the size of a new network. Indeed, we welcome
innovative applications that will enable small groups of scholars to create new networks and
introduce research agendas that will develop during the course of the years that the Network
exists. We favour networks that plan a range of ongoing activity over the two years of funding
rather than a single large event.Proposals should give a brief account of the theme of the network, as well as its
interdisciplinary nature. In addi2on, applicants should provide information about plans for
proposed network activities and a preliminary budget outlining how they will spend the funds.
The deadline for the first round of applications is 30th of June 2023. This will be a yearly call.
Requirements:
- Hosting one of the Ancient World Seminars each academic year.
- Organizing a graduate workshop
- Organizing an event for BA students
What CRASIS can offer:
- Funding for 2 years, up to 1200 EUR for 2 years. Applica2ons for smaller amounts are
very welcome too.
- Networks receive one slot per year in the monthly Ancient World Seminar. The
network selects a speaker to invite, CRASIS will pay travel costs for the speaker, and
drinks and dinner aYer the seminar (up to a limit of 280 EUR per seminar).
Applications will be evaluated on their fulfillment of the requirements stated above and their
fit with the aims of the network scheme:
- To promote multidisciplinarity by creating a community of researchers from across the
Groningen academic community.
- To promote the integration of education and research.
If we receive more applications (which fulfill all the required criteria) than the budget allows
for, funding will be allocated via a lottery system. - Margarete-Bieber-Preis ausgeschriebenMai 31Mittwoch, 31. Mai 2023 12:57Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
