      Durham Collections Fellowships Durham Collections Fellowships for the academic year 2025-2026

      Durham University is delighted to invite applications from researchers for Visiting Fellowships of one month in duration.
      The aim of the Durham Collections Fellowships is to enable and foster research across the historic collections of Durham, notably Archives and Special Collections at Palace Green Library, the Oriental Museum, the library and archives of Ushaw College (the former Roman Catholic seminary just outside the city), the Cathedral Library and the archives of Durham Priory and Cathedral.

      The resources available to scholars include not only libraries and archives, but also collections of visual and material culture, and architectural assets. The purpose of the Visiting Fellowships is to support research into these globally significant collections.

      The Barker Visiting Fellowships are intended to support research into any of the collections held in Durham and there are a number of Lendrum Priory Library Fellowships available specifically to support work on the surviving contents of Durham Cathedral's medieval priory library. This collection is currently the focus of a large-scale digitisation project, Durham Priory Library Recreated [http://www.durhampriory.ac.uk<http://www.durhampriory.ac.uk]www.durhampriory.ac.uk<http://www.durhampriory.ac.uk>.

      The Lendrum Fellowships are intended to support research into any of the collections but there is a preference for applicants wishing to use the historic book collections of Durham. This is interpreted broadly to include consultation of individual books, study of specific collections, research into the material forms of books, histories of book circulation and collecting, plus consideration of the readers of books. We welcome applications from both academic and practitioner researchers at all stages in their career.

      The Lord Crewe's Charity Fellowships are open to any applicant wishing to work on the Bamburgh Library Collection. The remit is wide, from those wishing to research it as a collection, to those planning to consult an individual item, and also includes the material culture of the books.

      Fellows will be encouraged to work collaboratively with academic subject specialists, librarians, archivists and curators to realise the collections' research potential, and to develop innovative research agendas. They will also be encouraged to participate in the life of the University, particularly its broad range of seminar series.

      Applications

      Applicants should submit a short CV together with a summary of the project and materials they propose to work on, and the expected publications or other outcomes (the summary should be maximum two sides of A4). Applications should demonstrate a serious research interest that focuses on primary source material within the collections held at Durham. Applicants who plan to collaborate with Durham academic or collections staff are especially welcome and should mention this in their application. There is no need to identify a particular fellowship scheme when applying; the selection committee will decide which scheme is most appropriate, though applicants can highlight one if they wish.

      Applicants must consult with the relevant collections staff to ensure that the materials they wish to work with are available at the times of their visit. This is particularly important in the case of the Oriental Museum, the Cathedral Library and Ushaw Library, all of which have limited opening hours.

      There will be five fellowship intakes throughout the academic year, lasting for four weeks each:

      October = 13 October - 7 November 2025

      November = 17 November - 12 December 2025

      February = 23 February - 20 March 2026

      May = 27 April - 22 May 2026

      June = 1 June - 26 June 2026

      Applicants should indicate their preferred dates. They should also indicate to which university department(s) and/or research centres their research most relates. Applications should be submitted by noon on Wednesday 3 September 2025. We shall aim to notify successful candidates by mid-September 2025.

      Fellows will be granted an honorarium of £2,000 per month towards their transport and subsistence costs. A small number of PhD bursaries may be available to the value of £600. Please note that fellows will be expected to arrange their own travel and accommodation.



      Those who have previously held fellowships are eligible to apply again after three years have elapsed since their previous award. Please note that the maximum times an individual can be awarded a fellowship is on three occasions, or the equivalent of three months, over a period of 10 years.

      Recipients of all fellowships are expected to be in continuous residence in Durham and to participate in and make a contribution to the intellectual life of the University. This may include an informal talk, other event or blog post about their research, as part of museum or special collections engagement programmes.

      The research project Locally Crafted Empires: Intersecting identities under Imperial rule in Western Asia as expressed in local portrait cultures (1st c. BCE-5th c. CE) (LoCiS) headed by Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art, Rubina Raja, at the School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University (AU), is looking to recruit two full-time (37 hours/week) postdoctoral researchers. The postdoctoral researchers will be working on specific project tasks set out by the project director.

      The positions are for 1 year with the possibility of prolongation for another 2 years. Both positions will commence on 1 January 2026.
      About the project
      The LoCiS project investigates the rich but understudied local portrait cultures of ancient Western Asia with the aim of determining how they reflect local and regional entanglements with and responses to different imperial hegemonies. LoCiS aims to reveal new knowledge about intersecting identities on an individual, local and regional level through a long durée perspective with a global historical outlook. The thousands of surviving portraits have not been studied comprehensively - neither diachronically nor in contexts or in cross-regional perspectives. LoCiS aims at offering unprecedented insights into the multilayered narratives of the varied individual experiences in antiquity.

      The postdocs will work closely with Professor Rubina Raja and other project members. Tasks include work on the project database and catalogues, producing a monograph, co- and single-authored articles and contributions, organizing conferences, workshops and guest lectures, undertaking research travel. The postdocs will specifically undertake research on locally produced portraits from the region of West Asia from 100 BCE - 500 CE. The more narrowly defined region will be subject to definition together with the project director at the time of a potential interview for the position. Applicants should therefore specify in their application the region(s) within the study area where they believe their strongest competences lie.

      We are looking for candidates who are specialised in Classical Archaeology with a focus on Greece and/or the eastern Roman provinces and/or Near Eastern archaeology in the period between 100 BCE - 500 CE and who have a solid research profile and demonstrates wide-ranging knowledge of the archaeology and history of West Asia - here defined that the region from and including Egypt to Anatolia and from the Tigris to the Mediterranean with a focus on visual culture.
      Qualifications
      Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Classical Archaeology or closely related disciplines and be able to demonstrate expertise in ancient visual culture.

      Applicants must also be able to document:

        *   Research and knowledge in archaeology on topics relevant to the outlined project.
        *   Relevant academic publications.
        *   The ability to work critically with archaeological and ancient historical sources.
        *   A methodological and structured approach to work.
        *   Good organisation skills and excellent attention to detail.
        *   Flexibility and the ability to prioritise.
        *   Excellent time-management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
        *   Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.
        *   The ability to speak and write professional/academic English.
        *   The ability to read German, French and Italian.

      Athens: Visiting Fellowships at the British School at Athens

      Visiting Fellowships at the British School at Athens are offered for periods of between four and twelve weeks for research in any branch of the arts or social sciences related to Greece and related to any chronological period from the Palaeolithic to the present.
      The BSA is a world-renowned institution with its Library, Archives, Fitch Laboratory in Athens and the Knossos Research Centre. Fellows will become members of the BSA and will benefit from all it has to offer in terms of research facilities and accommodation in the centre of Athens. They will have access to the network of research libraries in Athens as well as the ability to undertake museum or site studies (with prior consultation). Athens has a lively intellectual life and Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the stimulating academic life of the BSA and wider Athenian community.
      Fellowships are open to established scholars at any career stage beyond PhD level, normally in full-time employment at a university, museum, or comparable institution, and are ideally suited to those who have been granted a period of sabbatical leave during the relevant academic year. Preference may be given to applicants from UK HEIs.
      Fellowships are non-stipendiary, but accommodation is provided free of charge and the cost of one return airfare from the UK or elsewhere in Europe to Athens will be reimbursed. Fellows are required to submit a report covering their research and their time at the BSA to the BSA's Council.
      Visiting Fellows will be expected to conduct a programme of their own research, give one public lecture at the BSA and an open seminar as part of the established programme. They should also be willing to concern themselves with the current students and their work and may wish to contribute additional lectures or seminars as appropriate in discussion with the Director.
      Fellowships may be taken up in either the autumn or the spring semester in Athens or Knossos. The period of time is usually spent in a continuous block but it may alternatively be broken up into non-continuous blocks after discussion with the Director. Accommodation is also offered to an accompanying spouse/partner, at a nominal daily rate.
      Before developing a proposal, applicants are advised to contact the relevant member of staff if they propose to include: BSA material (Archivist), BSA Museum material (Assistant Director), Knossos material (Knossos Curator), Fitch Laboratory collections and facilities (Fitch Director) or need permissions to visit sites or study material in Greek Museums (School Administrator).       One-year publication fellowship

      The Department of Classics at Columbia University invites applications for a one-year publication fellowship for the period July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026 in the Classics and adjacent fields funded by the Stanwood Cockey Lodge Fund. The fellowship is meant to assist an early career scholar towards substantial progress in publication of a monograph in one of these fields. Candidates are asked to provide a CV, cover letter, description of project, and substantially finalized version of sample chapter.

      The Lodge Fellowship recipient will hold the rank of Postdoctoral Research Scholar or Associate Research Scholar in the Department of Classics and is expected to take full part in the intellectual life of the department. In addition, the fellowship recipient will be expected to give three presentations on their project in the Department of Classics during the course of the academic year 2025-26. The fellowship recipient is expected to reside in the New York area. Upon completion of the project, the fellowship recipient will inform the Lodge Board, and acknowledge the support of the Lodge Fund in all published outputs.

      $82,000 salary + $1000 research allowance.

        The PhD candidates will develop independent projects on specific themes related to this research program:

         *    Topic 1: A comparative study of ancient monarchs who
      introduced significant or controversial religious innovations and the factors that contributed to their success or failure.
         *   Topic 2: A comparative study of the presence, role, and
      significance of monarchical elements in other constitutional forms, such as democracy, the republic, and oligarchy.

      Within this framework there is considerable flexibility in the choice of monarchies, constitutions, and cultures studied and in the methodological approach taken.
      All PhD candidates have a supervisory panel consisting of at least three members. The scholars will be supervised by myself and Dr Marko Vitas, a recent Brown PhD graduate qualified in both Classical Studies and Assyriology/Near Eastern Studies; possible other panel members include Dr Tatiana Bur or Dr Estelle Strazdins (Ancient Greece), Dr Meaghan McEvoy (Late Antiquity & Byzantium), and colleagues from the College of Asia and the Pacific and/or the School of Archaeology, depending on the precise topic.
      Funding & Research Environment
      The scholarship offers a tax-free stipend of $38,154 (Australian
      dollars) per annum for 3.5 years, with the option of a 6-month extension.
        The successful candidates will be eligible to apply for Research School of Humanities and the Arts research funding (currently up to
      $7,000 per candidature for PhD projects which include fieldwork/archival research).
      Additional funding for conference travel will be provided to the PhD scholars through the Future Fellowship scheme.
      All PhD students are allocated their own workspace in a shared office in the Centre for Classical Studies, adjacent to the ANU Classics Museum and the offices of Classics staff members. We host a number of visiting local and international scholars each year for seminars, colloquia, and workshops.
      We endeavour to offer all PhD candidates teaching opportunities in Classics, but we cannot guarantee these in advance. Our PhD students can take Advanced Greek and Latin courses alongside senior undergraduates to strengthen their reading abilities in these languages.
      The ideal start date would be the beginning of 2026, but there is a certain amount of flexibility (e.g. if candidates from the Northern Hemisphere need to start in September/October 2025 or an equivalent time in 2026).

      Full-time PhD scholarship package

      Australian Catholic University (ACU) is offering a full-time PhD scholarship package to undertake research at the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry, Melbourne on translation in Late Antiquity.

      The successful applicant will work on an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project 'Translation and Transformation in Late Antiquity' to investigate how translation in Late Antiquity evolved while communicating and shaping new knowledge, and analyse translation across a diverse range of political, social, religious, linguistic cultural groups in Late Antiquity.

      The research will either involve a case study or studies, drawn from either Biblical translations or translations of theological, philosophical, historical, and literary knowledge from the fourth to the sixth centuries CE.

      The PhD candidate will be an integral member of the project, working with the research team, led by Assoc. Prof. Michael Hanaghan, and including Assoc. Prof. Stephen Carlson, Prof. Bronwen Neil (Macquarie University) and Prof. Andy Cain (UC Boulder).

      Opportunities for mentoring and collaborative publishing will be facilitated. The candidate will also help organise and participate in a conference at ACU's Rome campus.

      ACU PhD Stipend Scholarship of AUD $33,511 p.a. (tax-free, indexed) for up to 3.5 years.

      The British Museum and the University of Nottingham are pleased to announce the availability of a fully funded Collaborative doctoral studentship from October 2025 under the AHRC's  Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships (CDP) scheme.<https://ahrc.ukri.org/skills/phdstudents/collaborative-doctoral-partnerships-scheme/>
      The project will test generative AI on a series of tasks aimed at recovering more of the texts of the Vindolanda tablets, including handwritten text recognition, reassembly of fragments, disentangling of palimpsest texts and restoration of missing sections.
      This project will be jointly supervised by Professor Alex Mullen (University of Nottingham), Dr Richard Hobbs (British Museum) and Dr Kai Xu (University of Nottingham), and the student will be expected to spend time at both the University of Nottingham and the British Museum, as well as becoming part of the wider cohort of CDP funded students across the UK.
      The studentship can be studied either full or part-time.
      We encourage applications from a diverse range of people, from different backgrounds and career stages.
      Students should have a Masters Degree in a relevant subject or be able to demonstrate relevant equivalent experience.
      The studentship is open to both home and international applicants.
      Project Overview
      The Vindolanda tablets are an unrivalled documentary source for the Roman army and its activities in Roman Britain. The research will examine if Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support the recovery of the handwritten Latin texts and in turn how this might be applied to aid the decipherment of other similar objects across the British Museum collections.
      Although much work has been carried out on the tablets, numerous texts are not deciphered, and the work to recover them is painstaking. A quarter of a century ago, research was undertaken to see if computers might help (Terras 2006 Image to Interpretation: An Intelligent System to Aid Historians in Reading the Vindolanda Texts), but the disproportionate effort required did not encourage development. Now massively increased computing power and the success of Generative AI in various ancient world applications (Sommerschield et al. 2023 'Machine Learning for ancient languages: A survey', Computational Linguistics, 49.3) mean that it is time to test the latest digital tools (e.g. GPT-4o) to undertake four main tasks:


        1.  identify and recognise handwritten characters;
        2.  digitally reassemble fragments;
        3.  restore missing text when objects are fragmentary or text has been lost;
      4)     decipher palimpsest (overlying) texts.
      These tasks would be undertaken using Generative AI pipelines that have already been created for Greek papyri (e.g. Swindall), oracle bones (e.g. Zhang), and cuneiform tablets (e.g. Dahl) and have the potential to bring new texts to light from the extraordinary Vindolanda collection, and to create improved models which could be applied to other BM collections.
      Research questions include:

        1.  In which ways have digital techniques assisted in the decipherment of the Vindolanda tablets, and similar collections, and what step changes can modern computing power and Generative AI bring?
        2.  How can we best train existing Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) models to recognize and classify characters in relatively small data sets, and which digital images work best?
        3.  Can existing models be deployed to reassemble fragmentary texts and even to restore missing text? What are the risks?
        4.  Can we deploy AI on a new task, i.e. disentangling palimpsest texts?
        5.  What lessons on imaging and best practice in AI can be learned from working with the Vindolanda archive and how can these be applied to other material, e.g. curse tablets/manuscripts?
      Research with the British Museum
      This research studentship is one allocated to the British Museum by the AHRC. The successful student will be expected to spend time carrying out research and gaining relevant experience with the partner in London as part of the studentship. There will also be the opportunity to work with experts in Roman epigraphy at the Centre of the Study of Ancient Documents, Oxford, and to undertake fieldwork at Vindolanda.
      Details of Award
      CDP doctoral training grants fund full-time studentships for 4 years or part-time equivalent up to a maximum of 8 years.
      The award pays tuition fees up to the value of the full-time home fee. Research Councils UK Indicative Fee Level for 2024/2025 is £5,006. Students with an 'overseas' fee status are welcome to apply and, if successful, will receive a University of Nottingham international fee scholarship, which will cover the difference between home and international fee rates.  International students will be required to reside in the UK until completion of the PhD.
      The award pays an annual stipend for all students, both home and international students. This stipend is tax free, and is the equivalent of an annual salary, enabling the student to pay living costs. The UKRI Minimum Doctoral Stipend for 2024/2025 is £20,780 plus a 'London-based partner organization allowance' of £1000 per year. There is also a CDP maintenance payment of £600 per year. A Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG) of £750 per year is available. This can be used to support study visits, conference attendance, training and development opportunities which are necessary for the student's primary research.

      The successful candidate is eligible to receive an additional travel and related expenses grant during the course of the project courtesy of The British Museum, worth up to £1,500 per year for 4 years.
      The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional development events and activities organised for all Collaborative Doctoral Partnership students who are registered with different universities and studying with cultural and heritage organisations across the UK. These activities are organised by a coordination team based at the V&A and are designed to provide CDP researchers with the knowledge, networks and skills to thrive in their future careers.

        *   This studentship is open to both Home and International applicants.
        *   To be classed as a home student, candidates must meet the following criteria:

        1.  Be a UK or Irish National (meeting residency requirements), or
        2.  Have settled status, or

      Der Verein von Altertumsfreunden im Regierungsbezirk Darmstadt e.V. vergibt zusammen mit dem
      Hessischen Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst sowie der hessenARCHÄOLOGIE im Landesamt
      für Denkmalpflege Hessen alle zwei Jahre den Eduard-Anthes-Preis an Archäologinnen und Archäologen.
      Der Preis ist mit 7.500 € dotiert.

      Bewerbungsvoraussetzung
      Vorausgesetzt wird eine herausragende Dissertation in der Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Provinzialrömischen
      Archäologie oder Mittelalter- bzw. Neuzeitarchäologie, die sich thematisch mit dem deutschen Mittelge-
      birgsraum zwischen Neckarmündung und Norddeutscher Tiefebene beschäftigt. Der Abschluss der (pub-

      Wer wir sind:
      Das KU Forschungskolleg „Dialogkulturen. Wissenschaftliche Reflexionsräume für Kultur-und
      Sozialwissenschaften“ wurde als Forschungsplattform an der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt
      eingerichtet, um interdisziplinäre Forschung in den Kultur-, Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu fördern. Das
      Zentrum unterstützt sowohl Postdoc-Projekte als auch Forschungsvorhaben erfahrener und etablierter
      Wissenschaftler:innen. Es hat das Ziel, den wissenschaftlichen Austausch und die kritische Debatte über
      disziplinäre Grenzen und akademische Karrierestufen hinweg zu ermöglichen und zu stärken.
      Die Forschungsprojekte des FK orientieren sich an seinem übergreifenden Schwerpunkt „Dialogkulturen“,
      verstanden als soziokulturelles Phänomen, dynamische Praxis und transformativer Prozess kulturellen Austauschs
      unter unterschiedlichen konflikthaften kommunikativen Bedingungen und Szenarien. Aktuelle
      Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen Kulturen der Antike, (De-)Kolonialisierung, Grenzen/Räume, Künste und
      Literaturen in gesellschaftlichen Kontexten sowie die Interrelationen von Gattungen und Medien. Darüber hinaus
      steht das Zentrum allen Forschungsfragen und theoretischen Ansätzen offen, die sich in sein übergeordnetes
      Rahmenkonzept einfügen.
      Das Zentrum bietet nicht nur ein Forum zur Förderung und Vernetzung exzellenter Forschung in den Geistes- und
      Sozialwissenschaften, sondern dient auch als Raum für kritische Debatten, Erkundung und Auseinandersetzung
      mit aktuellen kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Das FK „Dialogkulturen“ trägt damit zur
      wissenschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Wissensvermittlung bei.
      Wen wir suchen:
      Das Senior Fellowship richtet sich an erfahrene Wissenschaftler:innen, die eine Professur oder eine gleichwertige
      Postdoc-Forschungsstelle an einer Universität oder Forschungseinrichtung innehaben. Bewerbungen sind aus
      allen Bereichen der Kultur-, Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften unabhängig von Geschlecht, Alter oder
      disziplinärem Hintergrund willkommen.
      Das Senior Fellowship 2025 kann für maximal vier Wochen entweder zwischen Juni und Juli 2025 oder zwischen
