« Rencontre d’histoire de la République Romaine »
2026 : Rome et la mer à l’époque républicaine,
Toulouse, 3-4 septembre 2026.
Ce colloque se propose de revenir sur le rapport des
Romains à la mer, sous toutes ces dimensions. L’appel
s’adresse aux chercheurs, jeunes chercheurs,
doctorants ou docteurs, travaillant dans les disciplines
suivantes : histoire, archéologie, histoire de l’art,
anthropologie historique, lettres classiques.
Les propositions de contribution doivent être appuyées
sur des recherches originales et pourront s’inscrire dans
l’une de ces thématiques :
1. La mer comme partie des discours et des
imaginaires (poésie, philosophie, géographie,
œuvres historiques). Cela pourra concerner
aussi les expéditions maritimes de grande
ampleur et la connaissance que les Romains
avaient de ces espaces : connaissances
scientifiques et géographiques par exemple.
2. Explorer, contrôler, dominer : on pourra ainsi s’intéresser à la réalité des premières entreprises
maritimes romaines, aux étapes du développement d’une marine de guerre, en lien avec les étapes
et les modalités de la mainmise romaine sur les côtes et sur les îles.
3. Investir les littoraux : quelles mises en valeur pour ces territoires spécifiques ? quelles difficultés ?
4. L’économie de la mer ou la mer comme espace économique, traversé d’un certain nombre de flux.
5. L’histoire de Rome au prisme de la mer, i.e. se demander si et comment la mer joué un rôle
spécifique dans la construction de la République romaine, dans les rela tions de Rome avec ses
voisins italiens, avec les enjeux de conquête à l’échelle de la péninsule.
Les propositions veilleront à s’intégrer à ces perspectives (qui ne sont cependant pas exhaustives), n’hésitant pas à les croiser. Elles comprendront un bref résumé du projet (500 mots maximum), accompagné d’un bref CV d’une page maximum pour les doctorants et post-doctorants, et sont à envoyer pour le 13 mars 2026 au plus tard à :

Call for Papers for a Postgraduate Workshop:
Intellectual Interaction Between Paganism and Christianity
It is a truism to call the Late Antique world a Christian world. The imperial families became Christian and so eventually did most of the imperial elite and also step by step most of the inhabitants of the empire. One could say Constantine’s embracing of Christianity was a turning point that led from a pagan to a Christian world. Yet the Lebenswelt of the average Late Antique person was far from being Christianised in a total sense of the word. On the contrary, the remains of centuries of pagan culture were present in every part of everyday life. Of course, pagans did not suddenly disappear but for a long time constituted a significant part of the inhabitants of the empire. This pagan presence challenged, provoked or inspired intellectual interaction with it. In most cases it could not simply be ignored. The ways that Christian authors dealt with it were very different: Assimilation, condemnation or reinterpretation are among the most common approaches. But some authors might not even have considered the dichotomy to be problematic, and thus engaged with paganism in a casual manner even though this (at least for our conceptions) was not in accordance with their public function.
Within the scope of this postgraduate workshop we ask you to present thoughts and cases on those intellectual interactions. PhD students and recent PhD holders from all fields that study the Imperial Roman Era and Late Antiquity are welcome to apply. Chances are that you have been confronted with these discourses in your texts as well while working on your dissertation. We encourage you to send in short proposals for case-study oriented presentations (20-30 minutes) on this topic. Every presentation will be followed by a discussion on the presented case among early-career peers that will lead to a broader understanding of this complex phenomenon. Guiding questions can include but are not limited to: How and why did certain authors engage with elements of pagan culture? Were certain parts of pagan culture more likely to be embraced or rejected as part of one’s background? What was considered specifically pagan by Christians? And how did pagan authors for their part react to the rise of Christianity? How did the political or social background of our authors shape their view of the dichotomy? Is the outlined dichotomy still fruitful for analysing and interpreting Late Antique sources or is it a careless simplification that does not reflect the Lebenswelt of some of our sources?

The Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies offers a number of postdoctoral Visiting Fellowships each academic year. Each Visiting Fellow is appointed for a maximum of one academic term and receives access to the University of Cambridge library system for the duration of their fellowship.
Purpose of the Fellowships
The purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage and support research of the highest quality in the field of Greek Studies. This field covers the languages, cultures and history of the people of the Greek peninsula and their near neighbours or diaspora from the 2nd millennium BCE to the present, or of the reception of the above in an adjacent field in the humanities including, but not restricted to, history, education, literary criticism, divinity, law, and architecture. It also covers comparative scholarship involving Greek Studies.
The fellowships are of 4 to 10 weeks duration and are intended to help diverse scholars from around the world share ideas and forge new partnerships in a vibrant, cross-disciplinary context. The Centre particularly encourages innovative scholarship in the broad field of Greek studies, via fresh diachronic, synchronic, comparative, methodological or theoretical perspectives.
The terms of the appointments provide for financial support including:
* £300 per week (7 days), or part week, for a maximum of ten weeks;
* travel costs (including ground transport.)

The ERC-funded project PECUNIA (https://pecunia.huma-num.fr/) is inviting applications for a 3-year doctoral contract to investigate public wealth in the cities of Roman Asia Minor (27 BC-AD 235).
As a member of PECUNIA and the Laboratoire Orient & Méditerranée research department (https://www.orient-mediterranee.com/, UMR 8167), the doctoral candidate will be based in Paris. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator of the project, Anne-Valérie Pont, and their degree will be delivered by Sorbonne Université. He/She will also be enrolled in the Ecole Doctorale Mondes antiques et médiévaux (https://lettres.sorbonne-universite.fr/ecoles-doctorales/mondes-antiques-et-medievaux) and benefit from its academic environment.
The doctoral candidate will investigate the public revenues available for the financing of civic life in the cities of Asia Minor. See further details in the attachement.
The doctoral student will join an existing interdisciplinary team of international researchers with whom they will work regularly. The successful candidate will be expected to complete their doctoral thesis (language to be determined in the contract, also depending on joint supervision of the thesis) within three years, to communicate their results widely to academic and non-academic audiences, and to take part in the events convened by the team (see previous ones here: https://pecunia.huma-num.fr/news/).

Sehr geehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
zum 19. Internationalen Kolloquium zum Provinzialrömischen Kunstschaffen möchten wir Sie
herzlich einladen!
Ort und Zeit:
Frankfurt (Archäologisches Museum; Goethe-Universität; Römisch-Germanische Kommission
des Deutschen Archäologischen Institutes), Mainz (Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie) und
Römerkastell Saalburg, 1.–7. Juni 2026
Die Tagungsorte in Frankfurt und Mainz sind mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln bequem zu
erreichen. Für den Tag auf der Saalburg wird ein Bustransfer bereitgestellt.
Thema der Tagung:
Der Fokus der Tagung liegt auf den Steindenkmälern der römischen Provinzen in ihren
unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen, als zwei- und als dreidimensionale Objekte, als Träger
von Bild- und Textinformationen sowie als Bestandteile skulpturaler und architektonischer
Ensembles. Ziel ist es, das Aussagespektrum dieser Denkmäler soweit wie möglich auszuloten
und sie kulturhistorisch zu kontextualisieren.
Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer sind eingeladen, ihre Präsentationen und Diskussionen
an einem der folgenden Schwerpunktthemen zu orientieren:
- Soziale Mobilität
- Datierungsparameter / Fragen zur Chronologie
- Neufunde und aktuelle Themen
Zum Schwerpunktthema ‚Soziale Mobilität‘:
Die römische Machtübernahme zog für die einheimische Provinzbevölkerung teilweise
grundlegende Veränderungen nach sich. Neben der geographischen Mobilität z. B. durch neue
Siedlungsmuster, Handel und militärische Dislokation betraf dies auch die soziale Mobilität.
Alte Eliten mussten sich neu positionieren, um sich zu behaupten, neue Eliten entstanden,
insbesondere im Kontext politisch-militärischer Konflikte. Bürgerrechtsverleihungen und
wirtschaftliche Vernetzungsmöglichkeiten boten aber auch Angehörigen unterer sozialer
Gruppen Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten, beispielsweise über den Militärdienst. Gerade in den
nördlichen Provinzen eröffneten die neuen mediterranen Medien Bild, Schrift und Architektur
sowie deren Kombination neue, nicht selten ostentative Ausdrucksformen der sozialen
Standortbestimmung. Diese ließen sich gleichermaßen zur Artikulation von Neuerungen als
auch von traditionellen Werten nutzen. Insbesondere Grab- und Weihedenkmäler, aber auch
repräsentative Wohnraumausstattungen eröffnen diesbezüglich weitreichende
Analysemöglichkeiten. Sie sind oft Ausdrucksmittel sozialer Kommunikation sich neu
konstituierender Provinzgesellschaften. Ziel des 19. Internationalen Kolloquiums zum
Provinzialrömischen Kunstschaffen ist es, zu untersuchen, wie die genannten sozialen
Prozesse im Medium der Steindenkmäler reflektiert und diskursiviert werden.

19th International Colloquium on Roman Provincial Art 2026
Call for Papers
Dear colleagues,
We cordially invite you to the 19th Interna8onal Colloquium on Roman Provincial Art!
Location and time:
Frankfurt (Archaeological Museum; Goethe University; Roman-Germanic Commission of the
German Archaeological Institute), Mainz (Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie) and Saalburg
Roman Fort, June 1–7, 2026
The conference venues in Frankfurt and Mainz are easily accessible by public transportation.
A bus transfer will be provided for the day at the Saalburg.
Key topics:
The conference will focus on the stone monuments of the Roman provinces in their various
forms, as two- and three-dimensional objects, as carriers of image and text informa8on, and
as components of sculptural and architectural ensembles. The aim is to explore the range of
meanings conveyed by these monuments as far as possible and to contextualize them in
terms of cultural history.
Participants are invited to base their presenta8ons and discussions on one of the following
key topics:
- Social mobility
- Dating parameters / questions of chronology
- New discoveries and current topics
On the key topic of ‘social mobility’:
The Roman conquest brought about some fundamental changes for the local provincial
popula8on. In addition to geographical mobility, e.g. through new seclement pacerns, trade,
and military dislocation, this also affected social mobility. Old elites had to reposition
themselves in order to assert themselves, and new elites emerged, especially in the context
of political-military conflicts. However, the granting of civil rights and opportunities for
economic networking also offered members of lower social groups opportunities for
advancement, for example through military service. In the northern provinces in par8cular,
the new Mediterranean media of image, wri8ng and architecture, as well as their
combina8on, opened up new, ogen ostenta8ous forms of expression for social posi8oning.
These could be used equally to articulate innova8ons and traditional values. Grave and
dedica8on monuments in particular, but also representative residential furnishings, open up
far-reaching possibilities for analysis in this regard. They are ogen a means of social
communication for newly constituted provincial socie8es. The aim of the 19th International
Colloquium on Roman Provincial Art is to examine how the social processes mentioned
above are reflected and discussed in the medium of stone monuments.

Five young colleagues who have submiced the best abstracts will be awarded with an Early
Career Bursary. This bursary offers a benefit in the form of free accommodation and use of
the library at the Kolleg of the Romano-Germanic Commission (RGK) of the German
Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt (the stay could be extended until June 10 at the latest).

2026-2028 RESEARCH CYCLE
“After the Enlightenment: Histories, Debates, and Reinterpretations”more information: https://www.fondazione1563.it/progetti/en-thp-2025/Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura (hereinafter “Fondazione 1563”) has since 2013 supported research and advanced training in the field of the humanities.
In a wider effort to pursue this goal, in 2020 Fondazione 1563 has launched the Turin Humanities Programme, a research initiative that allows junior scholars to work on interrelated research projects under the guidance of especially appointed Senior Fellows.
THP aims at promoting two-year research projects about relevant global history topics.
Under THP in 2020 Fondazione 1563 launched a first call for application for research on the Enlightenmnent legacy: the rights of man in a global perspective, in 2021 a second call for application for research on Political Thought and the Body: Europe and East Asia, ca. 1100-1650, in 2022 a third call for application for research on Slavery, ethnicity and race in the Mediterranean. Ideas and attitudes from Homer to Columbus, in 2023 a fourth call for application for research on Slavery and Serfdom in Europe and the New World: Debates in the Early Modern Period, and in 2024 a fifth call for application for research on Rethinking the Origins of Political Economy in the European World: Needs, Justice, and the Wealth of Nations.
Fondazione 1563 is now pleased to launch the sixth call for applications to award up to 4 two year fellowships for advanced studies on After the Enlightenment: Histories, Debates, and Reinterpretations.
The Director of Studies for this programme (2026-2028) will be Elisabeth Décultot, the Director of the IZEA Interdisciplinary Centre for research on the European Enlightenment studies and Humboldt Professor for modern written culture and European knowledge transfer at the Institute of German Literature, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg.

Projects are expected to engage with one or more aspects of the general research framework After the Enlightenment: Histories, Debates, and Reinterpretations.
Candidates are invited to propose projects examining how the concept of the Enlightenment has been constructed, adapted, contested and (re)appropriated in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries—that is, after the historical period conventionally associated with it.
The project will focus on the diverse issues surrounding the construction of the concept of the Enlightenment during this period, potentially in connection with related notions such as civilisation, colonisation, Eurocentrism, public space, and secularisation (among others).
It will pay particular attention to the interplay between national, transnational, and global dimensions of the Enlightenment, privileging both comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives.
The subject potentially encompasses all disciplines within the humanities, including history, art history, cultural history, history of science, philosophy, European and nonEuropean literature, political science, and many other fields.

In addition to the research proposal, applicants must submit their Curriculum vitae et studiorum and:
- an article-length piece of writing, published or unpublished, which demonstrates innovative thinking (written in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish) and
- the contact information of two scholars familiar with the applicant’s work and willing to act as their referees (one of whom can be their PhD supervisor); only the referees of shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Fondazione 1563.
Successful candidates will carry out their individual research projects under the supervision of the Director of Studies. They will also collaborate to the organization of activities such as seminars, conferences, exhibitions and summer schools, during which they will be invited to share their research projects with a wider community of academics as well as students and the general public.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF GRANT
These terms and conditions provide important information concerning the Turin Humanities
Programme grant.
RESIDENCY IN TURIN
Fellows will be required to reside in Turin for at least seven months per calendar year. All the
activities of the program will take place in person, and the presence of the fellows is expected.
Longer absences during the core period of activities (from November to June) will need to be
agreed upon with the Director of Studies.
The grant covers a period of two years, from November 1, 2026 to October 31, 2028.
During their residency in Turin, the fellows will be responsible for their accommodation in a
facility of their own choice.
RESEARCH CONDITIONS AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
Each fellow will be supervised by the Director of Studies, who will assist the fellows and
monitor the progress of their research projects, reporting to the Senior Fellows and to
Fondazione 1563.
A mid-term assessment will be conducted by the Director of Studies for each fellow in Spring 2027.
A successful assessment is a precondition for the confirmation of the fellowship for the second
year.
In Autumn 2027, the fellows will provide an interim report on their research in the form of a
2.500-word paper to be presented in a round-table format to the Scientific Committee of the
THP and the Director of Studies, and to be uploaded to the webpage of THP.
At the end of their fellowships, the fellows will be requested to submit to Fondazione 1563 a
comprehensive report detailing the outcome of their research project in the form of a 5000-word
paper to be published in the series of the Quaderni del Turin Humanities Programme, a publication
(both in printed and open access digital version) produced by Fondazione 1563 that will include
the written contributions of the Junior Fellows, the Director of Studies, and a selection of
contributions of the speakers that participated in the academic activities of the cycle.
The research projects will have to be completed over 24 months. No extension will be allowed.
The fellows will inform Fondazione 1563 of any other publication linked to the research
activities carried out within the framework of this fellowship, as well as of the presentation of
such publications at conferences or seminars. As is customary, it is expected that publications
deriving from research carried out during the fellowship will acknowledge the support of
Fondazione 1563.
The grantees will provide Fondazione 1563 with a hard copy of any relevant publication linked
to the research activities carried out within the framework of this fellowship.
Junior Fellows are expected to participate in the activities of the THP scientific community and
contribute to the writing of the Turin Global History blog content.
VISA
In the case of successful applicants who require a visa to come to Italy, note that Fondazione
1563 is included in the list of institutes approved by the Ministry of University and Research to
stipulate a hosting agreement with foreign researchers in order to support them in obtaining a
research visa.
Applicants are responsible, financially and otherwise, for making all arrangements for securing
a visa, and Fondazione 1563 cannot be responsible for the issuing of visas.
The grant may be awarded only once the successful candidate has obtained a visa.
Failure to obtain a visa by the timeframe indicated by Fondazione 1563 will result in forfeiture
of the Fellowship.
In case of successful applicants travelling with dependents, the applicants will also be
responsible for making all necessary arrangements for securing them a visa; they may be

The grant will be disbursed in six installments every four months starting from the beginning of
the fellowship (November 2026), except for the last installment that will coincide with the last

- Weiterentwicklung und Pflege der Online-Datenbank zur Verwaltung der Forschungsmaterialien („Zettelkasten-DB“ auf Basis von Django und React), einschließlich der Update-Pflege und ggf. Neu-Einrichtung des dafür betriebenen Linux-Servers
- Entwicklung von Software-Werkzeugen zur Unterstützung der Wörterbucharbeit und der Automatisierung von Arbeitsabläufen
