Australian Catholic University (ACU) is offering a full-time PhD scholarship package to undertake research at the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry, Melbourne on translation in Late Antiquity.
The successful applicant will work on an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project 'Translation and Transformation in Late Antiquity' to investigate how translation in Late Antiquity evolved while communicating and shaping new knowledge, and analyse translation across a diverse range of political, social, religious, linguistic cultural groups in Late Antiquity.
The research will either involve a case study or studies, drawn from either Biblical translations or translations of theological, philosophical, historical, and literary knowledge from the fourth to the sixth centuries CE.
The PhD candidate will be an integral member of the project, working with the research team, led by Assoc. Prof. Michael Hanaghan, and including Assoc. Prof. Stephen Carlson, Prof. Bronwen Neil (Macquarie University) and Prof. Andy Cain (UC Boulder).
Opportunities for mentoring and collaborative publishing will be facilitated. The candidate will also help organise and participate in a conference at ACU's Rome campus.
ACU PhD Stipend Scholarship of AUD $33,511 p.a. (tax-free, indexed) for up to 3.5 years.
Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship for up to 3.5 years for domestic candidates or an ACU Tuition Fee Scholarship valued at c. A$30,000 p.a. for up to 3.5 years for international candidates.
RTP Allowance (Overseas Student Health Care Policy) Scholarship for international candidates.
RTP Allowance (Relocation) Scholarship valued up to $2,000 for international candidates.

The British Museum and the University of Nottingham are pleased to announce the availability of a fully funded Collaborative doctoral studentship from October 2025 under the AHRC's Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships (CDP) scheme.<https://ahrc.ukri.org/skills/phdstudents/collaborative-doctoral-partnerships-scheme/>
The project will test generative AI on a series of tasks aimed at recovering more of the texts of the Vindolanda tablets, including handwritten text recognition, reassembly of fragments, disentangling of palimpsest texts and restoration of missing sections.
This project will be jointly supervised by Professor Alex Mullen (University of Nottingham), Dr Richard Hobbs (British Museum) and Dr Kai Xu (University of Nottingham), and the student will be expected to spend time at both the University of Nottingham and the British Museum, as well as becoming part of the wider cohort of CDP funded students across the UK.
The studentship can be studied either full or part-time.
We encourage applications from a diverse range of people, from different backgrounds and career stages.
Students should have a Masters Degree in a relevant subject or be able to demonstrate relevant equivalent experience.
The studentship is open to both home and international applicants.
Project Overview
The Vindolanda tablets are an unrivalled documentary source for the Roman army and its activities in Roman Britain. The research will examine if Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support the recovery of the handwritten Latin texts and in turn how this might be applied to aid the decipherment of other similar objects across the British Museum collections.
Although much work has been carried out on the tablets, numerous texts are not deciphered, and the work to recover them is painstaking. A quarter of a century ago, research was undertaken to see if computers might help (Terras 2006 Image to Interpretation: An Intelligent System to Aid Historians in Reading the Vindolanda Texts), but the disproportionate effort required did not encourage development. Now massively increased computing power and the success of Generative AI in various ancient world applications (Sommerschield et al. 2023 'Machine Learning for ancient languages: A survey', Computational Linguistics, 49.3) mean that it is time to test the latest digital tools (e.g. GPT-4o) to undertake four main tasks:
1. identify and recognise handwritten characters;
2. digitally reassemble fragments;
3. restore missing text when objects are fragmentary or text has been lost;
4) decipher palimpsest (overlying) texts.
These tasks would be undertaken using Generative AI pipelines that have already been created for Greek papyri (e.g. Swindall), oracle bones (e.g. Zhang), and cuneiform tablets (e.g. Dahl) and have the potential to bring new texts to light from the extraordinary Vindolanda collection, and to create improved models which could be applied to other BM collections.
Research questions include:
1. In which ways have digital techniques assisted in the decipherment of the Vindolanda tablets, and similar collections, and what step changes can modern computing power and Generative AI bring?
2. How can we best train existing Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) models to recognize and classify characters in relatively small data sets, and which digital images work best?
3. Can existing models be deployed to reassemble fragmentary texts and even to restore missing text? What are the risks?
4. Can we deploy AI on a new task, i.e. disentangling palimpsest texts?
5. What lessons on imaging and best practice in AI can be learned from working with the Vindolanda archive and how can these be applied to other material, e.g. curse tablets/manuscripts?
Research with the British Museum
This research studentship is one allocated to the British Museum by the AHRC. The successful student will be expected to spend time carrying out research and gaining relevant experience with the partner in London as part of the studentship. There will also be the opportunity to work with experts in Roman epigraphy at the Centre of the Study of Ancient Documents, Oxford, and to undertake fieldwork at Vindolanda.
Details of Award
CDP doctoral training grants fund full-time studentships for 4 years or part-time equivalent up to a maximum of 8 years.
The award pays tuition fees up to the value of the full-time home fee. Research Councils UK Indicative Fee Level for 2024/2025 is £5,006. Students with an 'overseas' fee status are welcome to apply and, if successful, will receive a University of Nottingham international fee scholarship, which will cover the difference between home and international fee rates. International students will be required to reside in the UK until completion of the PhD.
The award pays an annual stipend for all students, both home and international students. This stipend is tax free, and is the equivalent of an annual salary, enabling the student to pay living costs. The UKRI Minimum Doctoral Stipend for 2024/2025 is £20,780 plus a 'London-based partner organization allowance' of £1000 per year. There is also a CDP maintenance payment of £600 per year. A Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG) of £750 per year is available. This can be used to support study visits, conference attendance, training and development opportunities which are necessary for the student's primary research.

The successful candidate is eligible to receive an additional travel and related expenses grant during the course of the project courtesy of The British Museum, worth up to £1,500 per year for 4 years.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional development events and activities organised for all Collaborative Doctoral Partnership students who are registered with different universities and studying with cultural and heritage organisations across the UK. These activities are organised by a coordination team based at the V&A and are designed to provide CDP researchers with the knowledge, networks and skills to thrive in their future careers.

für Denkmalpflege Hessen alle zwei Jahre den Eduard-Anthes-Preis an Archäologinnen und Archäologen.
Der Preis ist mit 7.500 € dotiert.

Vorausgesetzt wird eine herausragende Dissertation in der Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Provinzialrömischen
Archäologie oder Mittelalter- bzw. Neuzeitarchäologie, die sich thematisch mit dem deutschen Mittelge-
birgsraum zwischen Neckarmündung und Norddeutscher Tiefebene beschäftigt. Der Abschluss der (pub-

Wer wir sind:
Das KU Forschungskolleg „Dialogkulturen. Wissenschaftliche Reflexionsräume für Kultur-und
Sozialwissenschaften“ wurde als Forschungsplattform an der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt
eingerichtet, um interdisziplinäre Forschung in den Kultur-, Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu fördern. Das
Zentrum unterstützt sowohl Postdoc-Projekte als auch Forschungsvorhaben erfahrener und etablierter
Wissenschaftler:innen. Es hat das Ziel, den wissenschaftlichen Austausch und die kritische Debatte über
disziplinäre Grenzen und akademische Karrierestufen hinweg zu ermöglichen und zu stärken.
Die Forschungsprojekte des FK orientieren sich an seinem übergreifenden Schwerpunkt „Dialogkulturen“,
verstanden als soziokulturelles Phänomen, dynamische Praxis und transformativer Prozess kulturellen Austauschs
unter unterschiedlichen konflikthaften kommunikativen Bedingungen und Szenarien. Aktuelle
Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen Kulturen der Antike, (De-)Kolonialisierung, Grenzen/Räume, Künste und
Literaturen in gesellschaftlichen Kontexten sowie die Interrelationen von Gattungen und Medien. Darüber hinaus
steht das Zentrum allen Forschungsfragen und theoretischen Ansätzen offen, die sich in sein übergeordnetes
Rahmenkonzept einfügen.
Das Zentrum bietet nicht nur ein Forum zur Förderung und Vernetzung exzellenter Forschung in den Geistes- und
Sozialwissenschaften, sondern dient auch als Raum für kritische Debatten, Erkundung und Auseinandersetzung
mit aktuellen kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Das FK „Dialogkulturen“ trägt damit zur
wissenschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Wissensvermittlung bei.
Wen wir suchen:
Das Senior Fellowship richtet sich an erfahrene Wissenschaftler:innen, die eine Professur oder eine gleichwertige
Postdoc-Forschungsstelle an einer Universität oder Forschungseinrichtung innehaben. Bewerbungen sind aus
allen Bereichen der Kultur-, Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften unabhängig von Geschlecht, Alter oder
disziplinärem Hintergrund willkommen.
Das Senior Fellowship 2025 kann für maximal vier Wochen entweder zwischen Juni und Juli 2025 oder zwischen
Oktober und Dezember 2025 beantragt werden.
Gesucht werden Kandidat:innen, die…
• ein thematisch und/oder methodisch innovatives Forschungsprojekt verfolgen, das sich in die interdisziplinäre
Forschungsagenda des FK „Dialogkulturen“ einfügt; bevorzugt werden Bewerbungen mit Bezug zu aktuellen
Projekten am FK;
• eine herausragende wissenschaftliche Laufbahn vorweisen können, z. B. durch Publikationen,
Drittmittelprojekte, Konferenzteilnahmen, wissenschaftliche Auszeichnungen etc., die dem jeweiligen
Karrierestadium und internationalen Maßstäben entsprechen;
• einen überzeugenden Plan für eine Drittmittelantragstellung oder ein anderes wissenschaftliches Vorhaben
präsentieren,
• an interdisziplinärem wissenschaftlichem Austausch interessiert sind und sich aktiv an Veranstaltungen des
FK (Brown Bag Meetings, Kolloquien etc.) beteiligen;
• ihre akademischen Netzwerke erweitern und mehr über Forschungsaufenthalte und wissenschaftliche
Karrieremöglichkeiten in Deutschland erfahren möchten (insbesondere für Postdocs und internationale
Bewerber:innen).

Veranstaltet wird die Tagung vom interdisziplinären DFG-Netzwerk „Rhetorik des Regelbruchs“, dem ForscherInnen der Klassischen Philologie, Allgemeinen Rhetorik, Journalistik, Alten Geschichte, des Rechts und der Philosophie angehören.
Geplant sind Vorträge der Netzwerkmitglieder sowie thematisch ergänzende Vorträge insbesondere von Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftlern, an die sich der Call richtet.
Reise- und Hotelkosten können übernommen werden.
Thema der Tagung:
Die antike Rhetorik hat uns eines der größten Regelwerke des Altertums hinterlassen. Zahllose Vorschriften regeln bis ins Detail, wie eine Rede erdacht, geordnet, ausformuliert, memoriert und vorgetragen werden soll. Auch moderne Rede-Ratgeber sind voller Empfehlungen für erfolgreiche Rhetorik. Das Verhältnis solcher Theoriefülle zur Redepraxis ist von der Forschung oft kritisch betrachtet worden. Und antike wie moderne Redner wissen sehr wohl, dass es gerade das Nicht-Einhalten der Regel, das Ausloten von Lizenzen, sein kann, das zum rhetorischen Erfolg führt. An diesem Punkt setzt unsere Tagung an: Sie erforscht den Regelbruch in seinem Ablauf, seiner rhetorischen Umsetzung und seinen ethischen, ästhetischen und juristischen Implikationen – in verschiedenen Epochen und aus der Perspektive verschiedener Disziplinen.
Dabei werden verschiedene Arten Regeln in Kombination mit verschiedenen rhetorischen Texten in den Blick genommen: Neben den technischen Regeln der Rhetorik selbst spielen auch gesellschaftliche Erwartungshaltungen, ethische Normen, tradierte Verhaltensweisen und persönliche Empfehlungen in der Rhetorik eine wichtige Rolle. Zu den rhetorischen Texten, in denen sie erwähnt, beschrieben oder implizit verhandelt werden, gehören neben den Lehrbuchausführungen auch Gerichtsreden, juristische Fachliteratur, politische Reden, Lobreden und Deklamationen. Ihre zeitgenössische Fortsetzung findet die Frage nach der Rhetorik des Regelbruchs zudem in modernen Bundestagsreden, philosophischen Abhandlungen und journalistischen Beiträgen.

- Was unterscheidet den gelingenden, kreativen Regelbruch von einem misslingenden, Anstoß erregenden Regelbruch?

- Was sind die sozialen Implikationen von Regelbrüchen?
- Welche moralischen Implikationen begleiten den Regelbruch?
- Welchen Platz hat der Regelbruch in der rhetorischen Theorie und Praxis?
- Inwiefern verändert die Erfahrung von Regelbrüchen die weitere Entwicklung der rhetorischen Theorie?
- Wie lässt sich der Regelbruch wissenschaftssystematisch einordnen?
- Wie stark und auf welche Weise werden Regelbrüche sichtbar (gemacht)? Welche Wirkungsabsicht knüpft sich an sie? Wie wird dabei die Erwartungshaltung des Publikums einbezogen?

The conference is organised by the interdisciplinary DFG network ‘The rhetoric of breaking the rules’, which includes researchers from Classical Philology, General Rhetoric, Journalism, Ancient History, Law and Philosophy. There will be lectures by network members and lectures that complement their topics, especially by young academics to whom this call is addressed.

Topic of the conference:
Ancient rhetoric has left us one of the greatest sets of rules of antiquity. Countless rules regulate in detail how a speech should be invented, structured, formulated, memorised and delivered. Modern speech guides are also full of recommendations for successful rhetoric. Researchers have analysed critically the relationship between this wealth of theory and the actual practice of speaking. Both ancient and modern orators know very well that it is precisely the non-adherence to the rule, the exploration of licences, that can lead to rhetorical success. This is where our conference comes in: it explores rule-breaking in its process, its rhetorical realisation and its ethical, aesthetic and legal implications - in different eras and from the perspective of different disciplines.
Various types of rules are analysed in combination with different rhetorical texts. In addition to the technical rules of rhetoric itself, social expectations, ethical norms, traditional behaviour and personal recommendations also play important roles in rhetoric. The rhetorical texts in which they are mentioned, described or implicitly negotiated include textbooks, court speeches, specialised legal literature, political speeches, eulogies and declamations. The question of the rhetoric of rule-breaking also finds its contemporary continuation in modern parliamentary speeches, philosophical treatises and journalistic contributions.

- What distinguishes successful, creative rule-breaking from unsuccessful, offensive rule-breaking?
- What effects and aesthetics characterise rule-breaking?
- What are the social implications of breaking the rules?
- What moral implications accompany rule-breaking?
- What place does rule-breaking have in rhetorical theory and practice?
- To what extent does the experience of rule-breaking change the further development of rhetorical theory?
- How can rule-breaking be categorised in the system of disciplines?
- To what extent and in what ways is the breaking of rules (made) visible? What is their intended effect? How are the expectations of the audience taken into account?
- How is rule-breaking realised in different text genres? What (genre-specific) effects are achieved by breaking the rules? Which ethical, aesthetic or social norms are thematised and negotiated?

The Institute of Classical Studies is inviting applications for the T.B.L. Webster, and A.D. Trendall Fellowships at the Institute of Classical Studies for the academic year 2025-26. The successful candidate is expected to spend a minimum of six weeks at the Institute although the Fellowship may be held flexibly within one academic year. Fellows currently receive an allowance of £6,000 toward the cost of travel and accommodation. A.D. Trendall Fellowship, deadline 15 May 2025
The A. D. Trendall Fellowship was inaugurated in 2000. The Fellowship is open to scholars from universities outside the UK. Preference will be given to applicants working in the same areas of interest as Professor Trendall, including ancient Italy and classical art history.

The T. B. L. Webster Fellowship was inaugurated in 1999. Professor E. J. Jory (Western Australia) was appointed as the first Webster Fellow. The Fellowship is awarded to scholars from universities outside the UK whose research interests are in ancient theatre and performance and its reception OR in classical art and archaeology. The successful candidate is expected to spend a minimum of six weeks at the Institute although the Fellowship may be held flexibly within one academic year.

This project explores how Alexander the Great's conquests and the resulting cultural and political changes can be understood through material culture, focusing on objects from the British Museum's collections.
Project overview
Alexander the Great's conquests (336-323 BCE) were one of the most disruptive periods in history, leading to the fall of the Achaemenid Empire and the establishment of new Graeco-Macedonian and local power structures. This project will explore how these transformations are reflected in material culture. The analysis of artifacts provides fresh perspectives on how Alexander's empire-building affected the everyday lives of people in different regions, offering a more nuanced and accessible understanding of ancient history and allowing for a more comprehensive interpretation of the cultural and political transformations during this period. The analysis will start out from the changes that can be observed in coinage. The evidence of coinage is particularly important as often it is the most precisely dateable and most demonstrative of political changes given the status of coins as 'official documents'. The coins' place of production, material, and iconography clearly express Alexander's impact on everyday life using a distinctly local vocabulary. Such changes will be compared to those present in other object groups, particularly in jewellery, figurines and vessels such as table ware. The successful candidate will have significant scope to shape the project by choosing particular object types on which to focus their study.
Research questions include:
* What can material culture reveal about cultural and political changes under Alexander's rule?
* How did different regions experience these transformations?
* Were Alexander's campaigns homogenising, or did they further diversity local identities?
* How does Macedonian influence appear in various forms of material culture?

Griechischen PhilologieDie Dr.-Walther-Liebehenz-Stiftung Göttingen verleiht regelmäßig Förderpreise an Nachwuchswissenschaftler in einer Gruppe von kulturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, die an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen vertreten sind. Der Stiftungsrat nimmt für das Jahr 2025 einen Vorschlag des Seminars für Klassische Philologie auf und lobt zwei Preise aus, die die wissenschaftliche Leistung junger Absolventinnen und Absolventen auf dem Gebiet der Griechischen Philologie (von Homer bis in die Spätantike) würdigen sollen. Die Beurteilung erfolgt auf der Grundlage des Werdeganges und der Abschlussarbeit der Bewerberinnen und Bewerber.
Ausgeschrieben wird je ein Preis in Höhe von
3000 Euro für den/die Verfasser/in einer Doktor-Dissertation und
1500 Euro für den/die Verfasser/in einer Masterarbeit.
Voraussetzung für eine Bewerbung ist, dass die Abschlussarbeit nach dem 1.1.2022 bei der zuständigen Fakultät eingereicht und bis zum 31.03.2025 abschließend begutachtet und bewertet wurde. Sie muss in deutscher Sprache verfasst sein, mindestens mit der Note 1,7 (für Masterarbeiten) bzw. magna cum laude (für Dissertationen) bewertet worden sein und der Anforderung guter sprachlicher Form genügen.
Die Bewerbungen werden fachlich von einer Kommission unter Leitung von Prof. Dr. Heinz-Günther Nesselrath beurteilt. Über die Vergabe der Preise entscheidet der Stiftungsrat nach freiem Ermessen. Er behält sich vor, die Preise gegebenenfalls zu teilen und auch Sonderpreise zu verleihen. Der Rechtsweg ist ausgeschlossen.

Wir Unterzeichnenden setzen uns dafür ein, diesen unverzichtbaren Bildungsschatz zu bewahren. Griechisch ist mehr als eine Sprache: Es ist der Schlüssel zum Verständnis unserer kulturellen Identität, es ist die Sprache der Naturwissenschaften, der Philosophie und der demokratischen Grundwerte.
Griechisch aufzugeben hiesse, ein wichtiges Bildungserbe zu vernachlässigen. Diesen Schatz wollen wir nicht aufgeben!
